Nokia today introduced a battery charger powered by the energy generated from riding a bicycle, targeting countries with limited access to electricity.
The new charger, which can be connected to any Nokia phone with a 2 mm charger jack, generates electricity from the movement of the wheels.
"Bicycles are probably the most common means of transportation, the supply of free, environmentally friendly power is pretty much limitless," said Leo McKay, a Nokia spokesman. "We are targeting the initial rollout in the developing markets, but we do, of course, see the potential outside of these countries."
Nokia said that a 10 minute ride at 10 kilometers per hour produces around 28 minutes of talk time or 37 hours of standby time.
The company said the charger, which comes with a holder to secure a phone to the bicycle, will go on sale for about $18 later this year.
